"My objection to the Great Society is not primarily an object to its economic and social aspects, though I agree that these are, by and large, sufficiently objectionable. My objection to the Great Society runs deeper. It goes to the very idea itself, and it holds not only against Presidents Johnson's Great Society, but also Governor Rockefeller's Just Society, and Governor Reagan's Creative Society, if indeed this last means anything more than letting people alone to take care of their own affairs. My objection to the Great Society is an objection to the very idea that it is within the scope and competence of the federal government, under our system, to devise and impose upon the country a special kind of society, however please that might be to the President, to the Congress, or even to the people themselves."

Will Herberg, Conservative writer

Martin Luther King, Jr. Civil Rights Leader

"If I had been elected president in 1948, history would be vastly different. I believe we would have stemmed the growth of Big Government, which had begun with the New Deal and culminated with the Great Society."

Strom Thurmond, Republican Senator from South Carolina

Shriver and the War on Poverty

"Recently a judge told me of an incident in his court. A fairly young woman with six children, pregnant with her seventh, came to him for a divorce. Under his questioning it became apparent her husband did not share this desire. Then the whole story came out. her husband was a laborer earning $250 a month. By divorcing him she could get an $80 raise. She was eligible for $350 a month from the Aid to Dependent Children Program. She had been talked into the divorce by two friends who had already done this very thing. But any time we question the schemes of the do-gooders, we are denounced as being opposed to their humanitarian goal. It seems impossible to legitimately debate their solutions with the assumption that all of us share the desire to help those less fortunate. They tell us we are always against, never for anything. Well, it isn't so much that liberals are ignorant. It's just that they know so much that isn't so."

Conservative Viewpoints

"I think first, the first principle that ought to strike home is that welfare reform should be designed and run by those closest to the problem, the states . . . The answer is not more waivers. governors should not have to play a game of "Mother may I." The waiver process only perpetuates a flawed system . . . ."

[Senate liberals have extended] federal disability benefits to individuals whose only disability is self-inflicted drug and alcohol abuse. Today, nearly 100,000 individuals collect such benefits. And the number grew nearly six-fold in five years . . .
What alcoholic would pass up a a chance to have the taxpayers pick up their bar tab? That's why the House welfare bill ended this absurd practice next month . . . That's not only and insult to taxpayers, it's an outrage for the federal government to be subsidizing someone's addiction. As the head of one homeless shelter described it, it's "suicide on the installment plan." It's wrong and it's got to stop . . . . "

California(R) Governor Pete Wilson in a speech for the Heritage Foundation in 1995.

Liberal Viewpoints

"DO NOT ABANDON CHILDREN! As President, you have the opportunity and personal responsibilty to protect children from unjust policies. It would be a great moral and practical wrong for you to sign any welfare"reform" bill that will push millions of already poor children and families deeper into poverty as both the Senat and House welfare bills will do. . . . . .We do not want to "end welfare as we know it." But we do not want to replace it with welfare as we do not want to know it. We do not want to codify a policy of national child abandonment."

[Health reform] will destroy the country [because] in the next year or so [America will have to] dramatically cut the military because we can’t pay for it.

Former Senator Rick Santorum (R-PA)

[Obama’s budget] will move us even further down the path to universal health care. We are treading dangerously close to bureaucratic intervention in the exam room and I will not support any measure that leads to socialized medicine.
Rep. John Fleming (R-LA)

"The top-down federal approach to health care reform assaults the traditional state role in insurance regulation, squashes innovation, and undermines real choice and competition. PPACA is thus a bad deal for states, reducing them to mere agents of federal health and insurance policy."

"The Affordable Care Act is not just a law designed to cover the majority of our nation’s uninsured, moving us into the league of industrialized nations which guarantee universal health coverage for its citizens. The law also takes the crucial first steps toward reining in our runaway health care costs. It ends discriminatory insurance practices that leave many of our citizens one bad gene, or badly timed accident, away from personal bankruptcy. It does so while introducing insurance market competition that will lead to lower health insurance premiums for some, and better coverage for others, in the so-called nongroup insurance market where workers without employer-provided health insurance turn for coverage. The Affordable Care Act does all this while significantly reducing our enormous federal budget deficit over the next 10 years."
